Optical Monitoring System

NKT Flexibles has developed and successfully full scale tested a flexible riser with integrated optical fibres linked to an optical monitoring system. The use of flexible risers for offshore applications is increasing.

Larger water depths and frequent use of floating production facilities require highly reliable riser systems. Riser reliability and safety can be improved using optical monitoring systems. In particular, strain and temperature can be measured and monitored to improve the understanding of riser behaviour and performance and to optimize lifetime. Furthermore, a monitoring system will increase safety confidence, since riser loading and behaviour can be detected and lead to possible adjustments that will help offset excessive wear, tear or fatigue life deterioration.
